Manager, Compensation and Benefits

Overview

Reporting to the CFO/ COO, the Manager, Compensation and Benefits will be responsible for effective management of the operations of Accretive’s benefit programs; and for keeping employment policies; onboarding, performance management, off-boarding and related tools up to date and organized. The Manager, Compensation and Benefits will maintain an in depth understanding of employment laws and ensure that Accretive’s polices, business practices and processes result in compliance. The incumbent will provide ongoing guidance and support regarding compensation and benefits related matters mainly to Human Resource Administrators and Market Leaders in Accretive’s nine US locations. The Manager, Compensation and Benefits will, also, be part of a team that will coordinate work efforts to develop and deliver Human Resources services and programs to Accretive’s employees. The team will include the General Counsel (GC), People and Culture (P&C) Executive and Manager, and the CFO/COO.

Responsibilities: 

Employee Benefits

Plan Design: Coordinate reviews of plan design in concert with CFO, GC and P&C. Work with current advisors on details of benefit offerings, economics (including stop loss coverage, employee/employer share), ACA changes, compliance and other administrative matters.

Open Enrollment: Manage open enrollment process, including communication with employees and development of videos used in communication to employees; coordination with employees, service center and advisor; coordination with payroll for deductions and other issues. Major effort in Q4.

Ongoing Management: Manage day-to-day employee benefits operations. Interact with service center to address enrollment and deduction problems and changes. Address questions regarding protocol and decisions that have to be made especially in the event of policy questions. Ensure compliance with IRS rules and the benefit plan so that Accretive’s employees receive the benefits they and the Firm are paying for.

  • Main contact with Benefit Service Center
  • Coordinate with benefit advisor on the ordering of BeWell reward cards as needed.
  • Collaborate on enhancements to wellness programs
  • Manage Tobacco Cessation program
  • Manage FA look back report and process
  • Oversee all the benefits related payments made including but not limited to those for employees’ claims, company and employee paid premiums and, advisory fees.

401K

Investment Review: Schedule and participate in the quarterly 401K investment review with General Counsel (GC), CFO/COO, P&C and investment manager (Assurance) to review investment performance, investment choices, plan fees and compliance with ERISA. GC takes the lead in this relationship.

Troubleshoot: Address 401K payroll issues as they surface (new hires, re-hires, distributions, loans). Coordinate between Accretive payroll and ADP, the 401K record keeper. Review and assist in reconciling monthly, quarterly and annual compliance reports from ADP.

Compliance with Employment Laws

  • Monitor and/or implement changes to ensure compliance (e.g. new I-9 form, E-Verify training and setup, and the FLSA overtime regulations)
  • Act as a line of defense for GC and CFO/COO to be sure the Firm is in compliance with all laws and regulations.
  • Manage FLSA Wizard to ensure this tool is up to date and accurately assesses exempt and HCE status.
  • Manage leave process (disability and FMLA) for non-CA locations
  • Federal and State postings – Maintain automatic updates and delivery for all non-CA locations

New Hires

  • Provide support as needed for Corporate and other key hires (e.g., coordination of interviews, gathering feedback, being part of the interview team)
  • Main contact for Orsus Group
  • Review and authorize payment of Orsus’ monthly bills.
  • Work with Markets for any background check issues; take action to resolve.
  • Advise as needed in terms of offers and market compensation benchmarks to determine compensation for key employees and all Corporate roles
  • Create offer letters reflecting agreed terms for new hires and status changes as needed

Policies

Update Corporate HR policies including employee handbook, PTO and holiday schedules

Documentation Management

  • Create and update HR Admin only and other HR related folders on BOX
  • Keep all Incentive Compensation documents up to date in Word and PDF
  • Maintain standard templates for offer, promotion, separation, and other status changes
  • Coordinate the distribution, signing and filing of Incentive Plan documents
  • Keep all updated Corporate HR Policies on file
  • Manage benefit and policy section of intranet site (Aka SharePoint)

Terminations and Severance Discussions

Work with CEO, Market Leaders, GC and CFO/COO as appropriate to ensure termination decisions are properly made and documented. Prepare the necessary paperwork and process changes (e.g., separation agreements, severance agreements, Cobra, 401K and restricted stock information and administration).

Requirements: 

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or similar discipline from an accredited college or university is required. A Master’s degree in Human Resource Management and SPHR certification is desirable.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in management of compensation/payroll, employee benefits and HR compliance
  • Proven proficiency in knowing and applying employment laws and developing policies related particularly to ACA, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, EEOC, FLSA, ERISA and other federal and state laws
  • Successful experience managing outside service providers and supporting their processes to deliver employee benefits
  • In depth understanding of the details and hands on experience related to transaction processing, controls (e.g. reconciliations) and reporting requirements related to processing of employee benefits
  • Clear, succinct, persuasive written and verbal communication skills responsive to a wide range of audiences
  • Excellent listening, issue identification and problem solving skills to confidently, efficiently and effectively support all employees and other constituents
  • Financial acumen and analytical skills to accurately address pay and deduction issues; reconciliations; enterprise costs and savings opportunities; and other economic decisions
  • Expert user of vendors’ technology required to perform benefits administration processes. In addition, expert skill in using the Internet and Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
